As my sister Katharine Holt, a Russian literature scholar, recently reminded me, one could read “The Lady with the Little Dog” as a lower-stakes version of Anna Karenina. But Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation, “little dog,” is closer to the Russian title. I have been looking for a good translation of Anna Karenina to read over the Christmas holidays. Previously, I had read the older Hayward and Harari translation. I especially love the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of Anna Karenina, so I really looked forward to their translation of Doctor Zhivago. The galling thing is that Tolstoy does this on purpose. It's a short story, not a novel. As “The Lady with the Lap Dog” because the first twenty or so times I read it, the title was translated that way. James Wood has focused on “the physicality of Tolstoy's details”—brought to the fore in Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's translation of Anna Karenina, which Wood praised in the New Yorker in 2001. In the introduction to the superb Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, we learn that, in starting to write “Anna Karenina,” he was trying to mimic an effect he noticed in Pushkin. While previous versions have softened the robust, and sometimes shocking, quality of Tolstoy's writing, Pevear and Volokhonsky have produced a translation true to his powerful voice. It's an affair in which the woman feels guilty and sad, but doesn't kill herself.
